Raise a glass, make a toast, know I'm not far away. As you look for me out of the corner of your eye or find me in your dreams, picture me with a smile and happy, know that we will meet again.

After Leaving Here
After Leaving Here
After leaving here, where will I go?
I have become comfortable
and really wish I could stay.
I am not yet ready to leave
though it's time to journey on.,
I find myself looking back
wave to all who yet remain
while I linger at the door.
One more look, I brush a tear,
though it's time to journey on.
After leaving here, where will I go?
I hope I find a new home
another place to hang my hat
in one more comfortable room.
if it's time to journey on.
(This poem was written for the Poetic Asides - Day 30 - prompt: After Leaving Here. I am really having a lot of trouble leaving NaPoWriMo. It has felt like 'home.' So I had to write just more poem.........)
Ode to NaPoWriMo
Ode to NaPoWriMo
NaPoWriMo, you blessed me with the gift of words.
Not only my words but those of many friends.
Every morning I awoke to first think of you..
What are today's prompts? What shall I write?
It has been a good month, sometimes a struggle,
but for me a wonderful heartfelt journey
a time of sometimes painful honesty and tears,
as well as a time to try to rise above.
Thank you all who have journeyed with me,
and this poem is also an ode to each of you.
I raise my glass to each fellow traveler.
May we continue to meet in these parts!
(NaPoWriMo30: Poetic Asides requested an ode, a poem of praise. This poem is an Ode to NaPoWriMo, which I will really miss. Also an ode to each of you who has visited / commented in my blog, I salute each of YOU. Cheers. Write on!)

Disease
Disease
Disease is a monster
insidious at first, cunning,
a clever trickster in disguise.
An ache here, a pain there,
normal you say, aging perhaps.
More blatant, but gives hope,
then cackles behind your back,
slowly destroys your body,
plays tricks with your mind.
You say you're a positive person,
will overcome as you pray,
take vitamins, exercise, do yoga,
meditate as you pop your meds.
Disease marches on, laughs,
as you succumb, give in,
give up hope, give up prayer.
In the end disease has its way.
Disease is a one way street.

In the Middle of the Night
In the Middle of the Night
In the middle of the night
I sometimes awake and
think for a moment that
life is as it used to be.
In the middle of the night
I sometimes dream that
life will again be filled with
possibility not probability.
In the middle of the night
I sometimes toss and turn
as worst case scenarios fill
every quadrant of my mind.
In the middle of the night
I sometimes try to pray
but prayers bounce back
echoes in a cave.
In the middle of the night
I sometimes awake and
think for a moment that
life is as it used to be.

Saccharine
Saccharine
Saccharine sickens me
sweetness nauseates.
Maybe if life were different
I'd identify with syrupy words,
find myself nodding, mindless
bobble head doll bobbing
with fixed expression,
but I find saccharine
mask to hide reality.
Few understand how
I despise fake smiles,
platitudes. I gag. They
annoy me, sorry if I offend.
I tire of treading lightly,
cannot make light of feelings
Saccharine sickens me.
(Written for NaPoWriMo 27...making clear I am not talking about sincerity here. Or real caring. Or anyone who comments here, I want to make that clear. But when it happens, with some kind of syrupy flip remark, as it has one or two times lately, it annoys me!)

Falling Short
Falling Short
I fall down the stairs
there is only one floor
I fall off the ladder
I did not go up a step
I fall on the ice
the sidewalk is clear
I fall out of bed
I still sit in my chair
I fall from the tree
I did not climb
I fall short as poet
some of the time.
NaPoWriMo26 (In response to a Poetic Asides prompt: falling)
I decided to write a little bit of playful 'nonsense' to break my serious, heavy mood!
A Prayer
A Prayer
Lord. I've never doubted prayer until now.
but I really don't understand how you
who say you are a loving God
can allow good people to suffer
and why my prayer and others' prayers
are not answered. What am I missing,
Lord? Are my prayers just empty words?
If prayers are only to make me feel good,
if they accomplish nothing at all, I will
cease praying. I don't want to waste
my energy or my time. Lord, if prayers
really mean something, please show me
somehow. I am open to You, but forgive
doubt. I am human and hurting, but
I want to believe. Please show me.

I'm Going to Quit
I'm Going to Quit
I'm going to quit doing it
whatever it is that bugs you
before it's too late
so tell me habits I have
expressions I use
ways that I am that
drive you crazy, and then
if you please, will you ask
me the same question?
NaPoWriMo 24: Based on the Poetic Asides Prompt: something you're going to quit.

To God
To God
God, I wonder lately if prayers really help
most often today I doubt it is the case, as even
when one prays one says if it be Your will, which
gives You all options. And All Knowing God,
You know what will happen beforehand: someone
will be killed in battle; the earthquake will devastate;
the tsunami will destroy; the reactor will melt down;
homes and lives will be destroyed by the tornado;
one will survive surgery, one will die; one child
will die of cancer, one will be cured; one adult
will develop an irreversible disease; an innocent
will be struck by a drunk driver, wrong time, wrong place.
Where are you, God, who wants us to pray? You know
your will, the outcome is fixed, prayers answered or not,
imploring will change nothing, so please God,
in Your wisdom, explain to me why one should pray.

Repetition
Repetition
I try not to repeat myself he says
as he repeats the story he told
three times today and everyday,
but in each telling he adds details,
so in the repeating it grows richer
and longer, and I try not to yawn
as he repeats a revised version
of the same old story yet again
with the excited look of a child
telling a story for the first time.
(NaPoWriMo 22 is totally fictional, though haven't we all known elders who have repeated stories? It was written using a Big Tent prompt: A poem in which you repeat yourself. This was my twist.)

Secret
Secret
I told a friend a secret
told her not to share
later, too late,
had second thoughts
but not before another
bit me with my words.
Lesson learned

The only secret
is one known by
only one

Questions and Answers
Questions and Answers
How well do you sleep?
Not well. I try to sleep
with television on. But
I still am often awake.
Why so?
Television prevents me
from thinking. I fall asleep
if my mind is tricked.
What if you turn off TV?
I don't sleep. Thoughts
swirl through my brain,
I twist and turn. Torture.
What is your wish?
I wish to sleep any way
I can.I wish for rest.
I wish for peace.

It is Not True
It is Not True
It is not
true that life is fair
rewards good
not evil
often evil will triumph
it is sad to say.
It is not
true that people reap
what they sow
fairy tale
people like to believe
hogwash after all.
This is written for the NaPoWriMo 13 prompt for today (5-minute poem --- well, let's say 10, to be honest), and also a Big Tent Prompt to begin a poem with "It's not true..." and also another form poem (PAD prompt 4/12). The form is a shadorma, which is 3/5/3/3/7/5 syllables per stanza.

Each Day (A Shadorma)

Each Day
Each day is
a blank slate to be
filled with new
happenings
positive or negative
but new nonetheless.
Each day brings
us what it will bring
often we
have no choice
though we attempt to believe
we are in control.
Each day comes
to teach life lessons
and we may
thrive or not
depends on whether we learn
all that we are taught.
Though I have written a poem for 4/12 and could probably save this for 4/13 and post it early a.m. and not have to worry all day tomorrow, I will post it tonight as an extra poem for 4/12. Glutton for punishment that I am. This was written for the PAD challenge today: write a form poem. The form of this poem is a shadorma. The shadorma works with syllables. Six lines in each stanza. And the syllables follow this pattern:. 3/5/3/3/7/5

Maybe I Will Begin Tomorrow
(for D.B. with thanks)
You can't imagine how often I page through
the autographed poetry books you selected
for us at the Palm Beach Poetry Festival..
You have my style likes down pat, hers too,
chose with wisdom, love and care,
treasures, all autographed to us by name.
I will tell you I always carry poetry with me,
in case I find moments to seek treasure
within the wealth of wonderful poetic words.
I will tell you I've read some poems to her,
she enjoys them, I'll strive to read each day
so she will be touched equally by your gift.
I'd like to tell you I've read each book myself
but truth is so far I've read some of each,
though I have intentions to carry through.
Maybe I will begin tomorrow.

Not Time Yet
Not Time Yet
I watched him shuffle the track
at the YMCA, slow, stooped
looking down, holding the rail,
and I said to myself Parkinson's,
and when he left the track
he brought coffee to his wife
who was sitting at a table
near the table I sit at now
with my laptop, and I see them
sit silently, read an old newspaper,
no glimmer of smile, and I know
their journey like the back of my hand,
but I will not speak to them,
will not interrupt, will not tell them
I noticed, as perhaps the man thinks
it is not obvious, but it is, and this
is the beginning or perhaps the middle,
and I watch him stand now, slowly,
with difficulty he rises from the chair,
to throw his Styrofoam cup away,
then follow his wife somewhere, and
I imagine he was one who once led,
one who arose quickly, set the pace
before the awful disease claimed
his body, dignity, grace, rendered
him invisible to many, ignored when
he began to speak, his voice softer now,
couldn't get anyone's attention, invisible,
weakened, a strong voice merely
an echo, see me, hear me, please,
his face a mask of former strength,
don't you know I was handsome once,
or does he still fool himself,
do they still fool themselves,
that this is as bad as it will get,
and would that be bad if they were,
but I won't tell them, not time yet,
as it is a difficult journey, individual,
that there is no way to beat
this dreaded life-stealing disease.
This poem was written to the NaPoWriMo prompt for day 11. Write a poem of 40 or more lines. This has 40 lines.

Never Again
Never Again
Never again will I climb Diamond Head.
It was rugged, rigorous, harder than it looked
from afar. Gradual grade, I thought. Wrong.
So many tasks are harder than they look
So many things I can't truly evaluate until
I am in the middle and then find the slope
startlingly steep or slippery, but have no
option than to forge toward finish, risk
Diamond Head again. Life, I guess.

Times Square
Times Square
What is the name of the bed and breakfast
I stayed in right off Times Square in New York?
Twice! With window open I could listen to sounds
of the city outside, the traffic, all night. I could
see the lights, the signs. Times Square didn't sleep.
Motion. Sounds. Horns. Hundreds of yellow cabs
snaked their way through the streets. Next door
a street vendor sold t-shirts, luggage. New York
City fare. We saw Cabaret, Chicago. Ate at
Windows on the World at the top of the World
Trade Center before 9-ll, toured China Town,
NBC studios, walked through Central Park,
took the subway late at night and felt safe. Yet,
how can what was so memorable leave my mind?
Damn, how could I forget the place I stayed twice
right near Times Square in New York?
(Alas, as I worked through this poem, I eventually remembered the name of the B & B. It was the Broadway Inn. Some who read this blog may remember! It is amazing sometime, isn't it, how some things that one thinks one will always remember begin to slip out of one's mind in time. Thank goodness, as I wrote this poem I remembered......)
1:24 P.M.
1:24 P.M.
1:24 p.m. I'm very tired
want to sleep midday
rare for me but can't as
he will come at 2 today
will move the recliner
so she has a comfortable
familiar place to sit but
it won't be comfortable
as in her living room
Tulilp curled on lap
while she watched TV
exercised, napped.
White-tailed deer pranced
into and out of her view
right outside her window.

Celebrations (Not)
Celebrations (Not)
Celebrations seem so remote.
Christmas passed without notice
New Years came and went.
I hardly know what year it is,
not to mention special days.
Valentines Day, first day of spring,
St. Patrick's Day, Easter coming.
All days I would normally note.
I don't keep track of what day it is,
thus can't imagine celebration.

Today's Poem
Today's Poem
I am sad today.
Overpowering sadness
tires me. makes me
want to sleep
and hope I wake up to
a brighter tomorrow.
.I mourn for so much,
but don't have time to mourn.
One foot, then another.
Trudge on, things to do,
sadness,wondering.
Time, how much time?
God I believed in you.
will I still believe when
I see how much suffering
you allow, I clench fist,
scream to heaven, damn
it just is not right, fair.
I am sad, everything I pass
reminds me of what we did
together, will not do again.
I am angry for my loss, for
your loss, for all you can
no longer do, all we will miss.
I wonder if I will be happy
ever again. I was never this
sad, could always see sun
somewhere, see possibilities.
My tears fall, often silently,
privately. I must be strong.

I Will Die on a Saturday Somewhere
I will Die on a Saturday Somewhere
I will die on a Saturday somewhere.
It will be summer, the sun will shine,
and I will die remembering all
that was good other summers
of my life when I was young
and not so young and welcomed
every day with open arms, knowing
each day would bring blessings.
I will die with a smile on my face,
warmed by the sun and memories,
no fanfare, alone with dogs, warm.
NaPoWriMo Day 4 based on a NaPoWriMo prompt which uses Cesar Vallejo's poem that begins with him saying he will die in Paris in the rain on Thursday. The poem is MY take.

Without Me
Without Me
Without me the world would go on
with nary a beat skipped even before
I was laid in the ground. Tears shed,
a sermon said, a meal perhaps
where people could say all the things
they had not said when I was alive.
I'd like to think the world would stop
the earth would crack, heavens would cry
but no. The sun would rise, spring would
turn to summer, flowers would grow,
rain would fall just as it always has,
Without me the world would go on.
NaPoWriMo #3 is based on a prompt at Poetic Asides: Imagine the world without you.

Postcard from Hades
Postcard from Hades
Postcard from Hades
surfaces with message
penned in blood, and
I wonder if God exists
sometimes when good
people suffer as they do.
I would like to throw
each postcard away
with its hurtful message
from one who doesn't
understand and strives
to clandestinely steal
true love away in the
dead of night in the
name of righteousness.
The fangs are there
and do not deceive
the one who weeps.

What Got Me Here?
What Got Me Here?
I got here somehow though,
I don’t know where I am.
But since I’m here I must
have chosen the place
and the means of travel.
I look to see what is familiar.
Are you here with me?
Is this a room? Is there a door?
Is there a window to look in,
to look out? Can you see me?
I see you now, but who are you?
I pound on nothing, scream,
no words come. I wake up.
It is the middle of the night.
I try to rise from the dream.
I cannot. It is no dream.
