Now Is the Time

source
Now is the Time

Now is the time to reflect
on what the year has given

to consider the year ahead
all that it might bring

to treasure one's family
it is the only one we have

to contemplate friendships
most often taken for granted

to remember unexpected gifts
that came at the right moment

to consider one's talents
how they can be used

to reflect on one's beliefs
how they might inspire action

to think about inner joy
how to pass it to others

now is the time to look back
the opportunity to look ahead

now is the time to reflect
how to begin the new year.

Blessings to each of you as we wind down another poetic year.  May your holiday be all that you want it to be!      For Poets United Poetry Pantry.

Another Year

Another Year

Another year draws to an end
and I realize every ending is
a beginning of something new

I could not have imagined
what this year brought my way
nor can I imagine what is ahead

that is the way life works
beginnings foretell endings
endings foretell beginnings

it is a continuous cycle
for better or for worse
the world keeps on turning

and I keep on living
not knowing what is around
the corner in my life

or what 2019 will bring
to the world!

I Was Away

I Was Away

I was away from poetry for a while
I would like to say I missed it
and could hardly wait to write a new poem.

I was away from poetry for a while
I would like to say I could not live without it
but that would be an untruth.

I was away from poetry for a while
I realized how easy it would be
to just fade away and not return.

I was away from poetry for a while
but now I am back once again
and struggle to find meaningful words.

I was away from poetry for a while
and poetry was also away from me.

After two weeks away, I am back.  Smiles.
Hope everyone is doing fine.  It will be nice
to read your poetry again.

Hope

Hope I

In these days of anger and anxiety
and dying inside from the stress of life
I will find hope in the cuddle of a dog

In these days of so much bad news
when everything is dark and bleak
I will find hope in the sunrise

In these days when things seem
to go from bad to worse to impossible
I will find hope in the crunch of leaves.

In these days when lies and hate
are more prevalent than tolerance and love
I will find hope in the smile at a stranger.

Hope II

In these days unlike any in my lifetime
in these days of every day a new low
in these days where truth is on holiday

in these days where the enemy list grows
in these days where the press is persecuted
in these days when nationalism is praised

I will strive to find hope.

This has been written for Poetry Pantry on a day I could be more hopeful really.  But there were a few good things that happened in this past week's election.  We maintained our wonderful Senator & elected a new governor in this state.  Nationally there was some good news as well.  But still I feel this country has not reached the bottom yet.  But I will try to keep hope alive.  I must.  We must.

One More Shooting

One More Shooting

One more mass shooting
more lives lost
shooter gunning for Jews
..........this time.

but next time it could be
the Muslims, the women,
People of Color, Latinex,
the democrats, migrants

but next time it could be
GLBTQ, the press, the caravan
of women and children
one thousand miles away.

Next time it could be me or you
it is not always the 'other'
who is being targeted
many must live in fear.

My heart cries for
the families of those shot
at their place of worship
going about their daily lives

My heart cries for victims
of all shootings and for those
who were targeted by a
right wing crazy mailing bombs

One more mass shooting
more lives lost
shooter gunning for Jews
.........this time.

For Poets United Poetry Pantry.

I had stayed away from this kind of 'poetry' for a while.  But I have been angry and sad this week about what this country has become.  Sometimes I think that so many horrific things are happening that we cannot even keep track of them and cannot react to all of them - for our own sanity.  I hope that after Tuesday's election there will be a bit of hope in the land, but the way the Republicans are trying in various states to prevent people from voting (through various means) I am concerned.

Another Autumn Poem

Wikimedia Commons

Another Autumn Poem

No scent or sight of flowers
when summer fell away
and autumn held sway.

All is still with leaves in a heap,
now skimmed of all but a fleck
of what they had once been.

The end: a load of nothingness
to fill an empty wheelbarrow.

I wrote this a few years ago and like it.  Decided to share it once again in the Poetry Pantry!

Chill

Chill

Chill moves in
so silently subtly
as silver frost
blankets the ground
turns green grass brittle
before brown

and I weep a bit for what was
and is no more and wonder
will the grass survive winter

and I cry for summer past
for all summers passed
and for everything passing

and

I realize
this is the way life is
the chill arrives
when least expected
autumn arrives
then winter
way too soon.

For Poetry Pantry.

I wrote this poem for the Pantry in 2015.  It seems appropriate to share it today.
We definitely are feeling the chill in the air along with blustery winds today. Another autumn is biting the dust.

At the End of the Day

Leaves of a tree at the farmers' market this morning

At the End of the Day

Was I kind?
Did I give more than take?
Did I read something inspiring?
Did I do something to inspire?

Did I smile more than frown?
Did I see others?
Did I allow myself to be seen?
Did I breathe deeply?

Did I walk more than sit?
Did I hold my tongue?
Did I listen to my body?
Did I choose to be happy?

Did I seek?
Did I love?
Did I live?

Let Us Bless the Earth

Let Us Bless the Earth

Let us bless the earth
the way it has sustained us
since the beginning of time

Let us bless the earth
its patience despite the
folly of humankind

Let us bless the earth
each season's beauty
remarkably sublime

Let us bless the earth
innumerable peaceful places
where beauty does shine

Let us bless the earth
its kindness to all beings
with wisdom crystalline

Let us bless the earth
let us bless the earth
yes it is now time.

Home

Home

To invite someone into one's home
means one is willing to discard coat
of anonymity to expose what is real
shed every ounce of ambiguity
without usual superficial pretense.

Outside the home one can pretend
parade flamboyant finery for all to see
but inside dark corners are visible
the dust of one's life is on display
an invitation to see is an act of faith

To invite someone into one's home
is a sign of trust that the other
will still find one worthy despite
unwashed dishes in the sink
and carpet replacement overdue

To invite someone into one's home
is an act of courage as well as a gift
to accept an invitation is a willingness
to observe what is real and true and
to know secrets beneath the surface.

Absence

Absence

Our lives are surrounded by absences
parents who have left us
pets who have crossed the bridge
children who have moved away
friends no longer in our lives
lovers who have moved on

Some absences we welcome
absence of illness
absence of pain
absence of loneliness
absence of toxic people
absence of fear
absence of winter chill

Some absences leave a hole
absence of purpose
absence of a full family table
absence of hope
absence of faith
absence of passion
absence of a place to belong

May we come to accept that
absence makes presence possible
that absence is not void
but can inspire the great
reaching out to something new
to fill the echoing void
loving acceptance of what
is already present in our lives

Our lives are surrounded by absences
may we find the presences hidden within.

Travel

Travel

Every time you leave home
you travel somewhere......

sometimes it is a familiar path
and sometimes the journey
brings you somewhere
you did not choose to go

Some paths are busy
and you meet many people
and some streets are bare
and you have only yourself
for company

When you travel
the importance may be hidden
until some future time
when you reflect
on all you have seen

Even if you travel with someone
you really travel all alone
as your thoughts are yours
and your inner journey
belongs to only you

and when you return home
you should be refreshed
enriched by the path you took
chosen or unchosen
the journey was yours alone

Every time you leave home
you travel somewhere.....

Keep the Faith

Keep the Faith

When the light around you lessens
seek the flicker in the dark
there is always a spark to be found

When your voice begins to quiver
continue to speak your words
know you are being heard

When the world seems unsteady
and the ground beneath you shakes
seek a hand of support.

When you feel bereft of faith
look deep within your soul
one spark will become a flame.

Keep the faith.

For Poetry Pantry
Do you ever write a poem to inspire yourself?
Occasionally I do.  This is one of those poems.

Bloom

Bloom

As the blooms of summer fade away
I await the bloom of hope
to dispel feelings approaching doom
these early September days

the climate is on the cusp of change
anxiety hovers wearily in the air
future lurks heavy beyond the horizon
I wring hands and wonder

what will November bring.

For Poetry Pantry this first Sunday in September

I wrote this poem in September, 2016, before the last Presidential election.  This poem is interesting to me now, as I was feeling quite anxious about who would be elected.  As it turned out, my anxiety was warranted.  I am sharing this poem again  - as now I am more than a bit anxious about our November elections -- Senators, Representatives, governors nationwide.

Listen

Listen

Listen to the world around you
it speaks in the gentle voices
of the rolling waves or the wind
as it rustles through the leaves
or in the howl of the lone coyote

Reflect on  the world around you
there are lessons to be learned
through  nature with its balance
of light and dark, life and death
cycles that repeat again and again.

Learn from the world around you
know that within your humanity
there is no perfection but if
you live in harmony with nature's voices
you too can become part of the plan.

Know that the world goes on
no matter what man does to disrupt
the sun rises and the sun sets
the seasons change, the rivers flow
and that you too have your place

A poem from 2016 for Poetry Pantry today!

Crossroads

Crossroads

I stand immobile on the crossroads, as
traffic comes at me from all directions.
There is no escape from being crushed
from one direction or another.
Something will hit me, get me,
it is just a matter of time.
I am sad, very sad, as I bide my time
but yet it is almost peaceful here
calm before inevitable storm
and there is sleep that gives respite
when it happens as it should
and it doesn't always happen.
There are still prayers that
the worst case scenario will
not happen, that God does listen.
I have to keep the faith.

For Poetry Pantry.

I actually wrote this poem back in 2010 - a lifetime ago, it seems.  It was relevant then, for another reason, and it is relevant for me yet today.  I would guess in some more years this poem will still be relevant for me.  I had forgotten about this poem.  I am glad that I rediscovered it.

My Little Poem

My Little Poem

My little poem
rests deep inside
in a deep corner
of my soul

too much a risk
to set it free
into a world
where evil resides

my little poem
will stay hidden
until once again
comes the right time

or perhaps
it will wither
shrivel and die
with passing of time.

This is for Poets United Poetry Pantry.
Looking for inspiration today I read Sumana's poem  My Little Poem.  The title
inspired me.

Grass Still Grows

An area of newly sodded grass

Grass Still Grows

The grass still grows
 trees take root
birds warble
and dreams take hold.

The wind still whistles
butterflies dance
coyotes howl
and spirits soar.

The waterfall still tumbles
penguins dive
monkeys climb
and hearts sing.

And life still continues
overcomes disregard
nature perseveres
despite human misdeed.

Shared with Poets United Poetry Pantry

I wrote this poem LAST August.  It seems very relevant today.  Perhaps even more relevant than it was last year.  The sod is mine.  What had been a dead area is now alive. I must nurture it though while it takes root in the soil below.  We must nurture the good.  Nature does persevere.  So must we.

My Voice is Still

My Voice is Still

My voice is still
I have nothing new to say
I don't want to bore myself
to repeat my  fears and anguish

It doesn't help to speak
nothing changes anyway
I cannot escape my fate
all words have been said

I try to keep my own counsel
escape craziness as I can
take walks with the dogs
my voice is still.

Where is God

Where is God?

I believe God resides in this tree
and if you question why, I say why not?
Can I prove it? No, just have faith.
Can you prove your God exists?

A tree is filled with mysteries:
one of them is God, nothing
more mysterious than one's beliefs.
I bow down before my tree.

I pray to my tree, and my chance
of having the prayer answered
is as good as yours. At least
I can see and touch my tree.

Can you see and touch your God?
Maybe that's not important to you.
But me, God is visible in my tree.
And where is your God visible?

Summer

Summer

Nowadays, especially for those of us
who have lived a number of years,
hot summers  pass way too quickly
while we pay absolutely no attention
until it's too late to recollect bygone days
not that one would choose to remember
the indiscretions of one's youthful past.

Summer morning sun always rises early
before vivacious birds begin to warble
to welcome the birth of each new day.
Grass is richest and most verdant green
the day before mid-summer drought
but it does not know its predictable fate
nor do any of us know our real fortune.

Summer skies are most azure blue
nature's late afternoon visual gift
jewel before each evening colorful sunset
and no one pays any attention at all
to the solitary wrinkled old man in the dark
who dreams wearily about his summers past
behind drawn dark curtain which allows no sun.

A poem I wrote in 2015 that bears repeating!  Smiles.

A Few Seasonal Haiku

A Few Seasonal Haiku

Humid summer day
dogs would like to take a walk
instead we hide inside

Fourth of July passes
almost without my notice
no flag on my porch

Burgers on the grill
Veggies and salads as sides
don't forget the pie

Picnic at the lake
mind cleared of all worries
let's skip stones now

Summers pass so fast
how many more will I see
how many for you?

Coolish summer day
dogs would like to take a walk
let's go and enjoy.

Wear White

Wear White

Wear white when you march
for peace and unity
a march to reunite stolen children
make your voices strong

March through the streets
from Washington to LA
Minneapolis to Houston
make your voices strong

March with your feet
march with your pens
march with your shouts
make your voices strong

Wear white when you march
until families are reunited
then wear black for the country
that rips the children away.

This is more a non-poem than a poem, but it is
the best I can do today. Submitted to Poetry Pantry.

About 750 marches are taking place in this country today,
Marchers were encouraged to wear white, symbolizing
peace and unity.

Some of the Many Things You Missed

Some of the Many Things You Missed

There were so many things you missed
so many things that you don't know about
so many things that you didn't care about
you were so into yourself.

it is too late now and I have moved on
I don't even think about you often
I really don't care any more
you are no longer part of my life.

I can't help think you missed something
and that it was your choice and not mine
you may regret someday or maybe not
you are stubborn like that.

This poem was written for Poets United Poetry Pantry.
It was kind of inspired by the TITLE of Christine Lowther's
poem, the one Sherry shared for her post at I Wish I'd
Written This.

Normally

Normally

Normally
I would have nothing
to say about being human

But today
I cry about what my country
has become

A country
I used to proud to claim
and to love

But today
I am sad and angry
my god

Taking children
from their parents
who would do this

My country would
I shake my head
and I cry

Images of children
crying crying --
humanity?

May those who
harm these children
be remembered

May those who
remain silent
be remembered

May my country
be remembered
for having lost its soul

God help the children
God help us all
I implore.

For I Will Consider My Dog Tulip

My dog Tulip at two years old

My dog Tulip today at 11 years old

For I Will Consider My Dog Tulip

For I will consider my dog Tulip

For she is a small dog with a big heart

For she has a bark that sounds ferocious

For if you know her she sits on your lap

For if you don't know her she might scare you away

For when she walks she walks fast and proudly

For when she eats she wants more than she can have

For when I thought she was sick my heart hurt

For when I found out she was well my heart leaped

For when I take a nap she naps with me

For when I rise she is ready to rise

For when the telephone rings she is expectant

For when I return she always wags her tail

For I love this dog as I have loved no other

For I know she will not live forever

For I hope we will meet again in the hereafter

Along with other dogs I know and have known

But not too soon.

Written and submitted to Poetry Pantry

I copied the style of the Mary Oliver poem 'For I Will Consider My Dog Percy' that Rosemary shared Friday for here "I Wish I'd Written This" series.  I have three dogs (all toy fox terriers) and love them all.  But Tulip is, for some reason, very special.  Hard to believe she is 11 years old.  I don't like to think about that.

Rest in Peace, Anthony Bourdain

Anthony Bourdain
Rest in Peace, Anthony Bourdain

His sense of adventure
the way he talked with people
found out their stories
while sharing food and a beer

Always had a smile
a charismatic presence
when he entered the room
he just had that charm

One country after another
he shared a love of food
and an ability to connect
with all that he met

His journey is over now
no more Parts Unknown
so many mourn the loss
of his life way too soon.

I would often watch Anthony Bourdain's program Parts Unknown.  He always looked so happy.  I never would have guessed he would take his own life as he was beginning the filming of a new season of his show.

Rest in peace, Anthony.  You will be missed by many who felt, by watching your show, that they knew you.

For the Young Who Want To....

For the Young Who Want To....

For the young who want to change the world
I say it has to start with you
in my day it was the youth on college campuses
but where are the demonstrations today?

It is your future so don't sit idly by
we all will march but we need you to lead us
you will be alive longer than we will be
what kind of world do you want for yourself?

We cannot continue to let them destroy our planet
we cannot let fascism take hold again
we cannot let them make shambles of law and order
we cannot them destroy all the good we had.

We cannot let them turn on all of our allies
we cannot let them embrace evil as friend
we cannot allow ourselves to become weary
but, young people, we depend on you.

I must admit I am disillusioned
day after day evil gains the upper hand
we need to march in the streets again
and, young people, it has to start with you.

I used the title of the Marge Piercy poem Rosemary featured this week - For the Young Who Want To  - as inspiration for the poem above.  I do think it has to start with the young.  I wonder why there are not more demonstrations on college campuses.  I wonder why there are not a lot of marches in the street.  I think, sadly, the reason might be that day after day there is one more evil thing happening; and after a while people become worn down.  But, we have to rise up, don't we?

Truth

TRUTH

Truth
what is it / where has it gone?
I think I see it in the distance
perhaps on the horizon
but perhaps it is an illusion.

Truth
my parents always told me
that I should tell the truth
and I knew what truth was
in those long-ago days.

Truth
we used to be able to trust
people were basically honest
news media was trustworthy
who dreamed up fake news.

Truth
I cry for what we have lost
and perhaps never will regain
damn the damage that is done
damn the distortion of truth.

Truth
I cry for the future I will not know
I cry for the innocent children
who will grow up in this world
where truth is most often untrue.

Truth
what is it / where has it gone?
I think I see it in the distance
perhaps on the horizon
but perhaps it is an illusion.

Truth.

My Mother's Flowers

My Mother and Me

 My Mother’s Flowers

Every Memorial Day weekend we journeyed to the greenhouse
to pick out flats of petunias, geraniums, and marigolds
to plant around our home and also for the gravestones
of the two cemeteries where my parents’ deceased were buried.

Stooping over the soil with her shovel, hand digging holes,
Mother artfully arranged geraniums, marigolds, and petunias
and an occasional coleus in her front yard flower beds.

As a child, I often found my mother standing with her garden hose,
watering her flowers before the rise of the strong morning sun.
I knew not to disturb her then, as this was her time.

Time passed. My mother could no longer care for flowerbeds.
Her eyesight dimmed year after year, blindness was inevitable.
Instead she planted flowers in large pots on the front porch.
It was important for her to grow flowers.

Then one day when my mother was almost blind
she awoke to find her flower pots stolen.
Gone were the plants that had been her pride,
the only reminder of her gardens of yesteryear.

The thieves stole more than flowers from my mother,
they stole her desire to grow them.  She never had flowers again.
They had been all that was left for her to nurture.
Nothing more to care for is a very sad thing.

Monday is Memorial Day in this country.  I am sharing a poem that involves a family Memorial Day tradition---at least at the beginning of the poem.  It is not a new poem, but I don't have the heart to write a new Memorial Day poem this year.  I do like this one AND the picture.  Smiles.

Now For a Breath I Tarry

Now For a Breath I Tarry

Now for a breath I tarry
as I contemplate the end of day
I wonder as I linger
what will still happen along the way.

I look back upon my path
and all that was accomplished
the fragrant flowers smelled
the dreams that have come to pass.

So much in just one life
many stages and phases
I smile as I realize that
one life can hold so much joy.

Not that all was trouble free
sorrows appeared along the path
tears flowed and tempers flared
imperfections by the score.

Was it worth it - this life?
did I make some kind of mark
the question asked of the wind
which echoes the question back.

Now for a breath I tarry
contemplate all that was lived before
I wonder as I linger
what more, pray tell, what more.

So often when I am uninspired, I take a look at Rosemary's Friday feature for inspiration.  This poem was inspired by a line ("Now for a breath I tarry")  from "The Shropshire Lad" - a Houseman poem Rosemary featured.

It is Enough

It is Enough

It is enough to awaken
each morning at sunrise

It is enough to look forward
to a little joy each day

It is enough to
enjoy simple pleasures

It is enough to have
dogs by one's side

It is enough to trust
the worst of times will end

It is enough to have eyes
that can read and see beauty

It is enough to have ears
to hear the bird calls

It is enough to have arms
that can hug and hold

It is enough to savor sunset
at the end of the day.

I am submitting this to Poets United Poetry Pantry.  I was inspired by Rosemary's I Wish I'd Written This in which she featured the poem "It is Enough" by Neil Meili.  Please take a look at the orignal.  Maybe it will inspire you too.

Dancing With the Sky

Dancing With the Sky

Dream of flowers and sweet fruits
romance and the ocean
inhale silver music of spring

feel the tropical breeze
laugh with the sunset
invite a lingering kiss

drink in sunlight and raindrops
oh to dance with the sky
and scribble the clouds purple!

I wrote this poem in 2016.  As I am not very inspired at the moment, I thought it was time to revisit it for Poets United Poetry Pantry.  It is pretty apt for this time of year!

Only Once

Diamond Head - Honolulu - Oahu - Hawaii

Only Once

I climbed Diamond Head once
walked a few hours to the top
didn't think it would be so hard
but it was a rough trail, very hot
exhausting to keep on walking.

Some things I will only do once
am glad to have done them
but glad to not do them again
the way I feel about Diamond Head
a healthy respect for what I did once.

Perhaps we  all have these things
that we did once and once only
so I am wondering what about you
what did you do once and happily so
but know you will never do again?

Written for Poets United Poetry PantryWhen you comment, rather
than commenting on my poem, it would be interesting to hear what YOU
have only done once and know you will not do again.

Spring

Peach Trees in Blossom - Van Gogh (public domain)

Spring

Spring comes eventually everywhere
           and in its own way
here it arrives with wind and hail
cheerless skies and unrequited dreams
of sun that resides somewhere (where?)

without the warmth with winter coats and mittens
fireplace still blazing chill from the air
it doesn't seem possible as I shiver
that it is mid-April with weather like this

but nonetheless spring comes as it will
on its own chosen day and cold or not
we know the world will green and warm
sometimes one just has to trust.

Spring seems to be arriving late this year.  We have high winds, rain, sleet. Most unpleasant.

Hoping the REAL spring will arrive sometime soon.

Spring This Year

Spring This Year

It is April according to the calendar
and I should be feeling hope
at the approach of summer ahead

but even though the skies are blue
and I can feel a slight spring breeze
I fear it will be different this year

without my usual optimism
having lost my hopeful tone
my inner landscape colored grey.

March

March

March for our lives
march for YOUR life
lives of your children
lives of your grandchildren

We can do something
we can march or write
we can make a difference
with our feet or with our words

The young can teach us
we must not be silent
each of us can march
in our own determined way

We must NOT be silent
we must all speak out
now is the time for YOU
(yes you) to march.

It seems that the older generation has remained silent.  We are being led by the young.  I hope some of you have also been inspired by the students of Stoneman Douglas -- David Hogg, Emma Gonzales, etc.  They cannot vote yet, but when they can they will be a force to be reckoned with.  Today (Saturday) was the March For Our Lives in many cities around the globe.  I am heartened by this.  But we ALL must find our way to march.

Don't You

Don't You

Don't you forget me when I am gone
remember me, the smile on my face
the way I laughed, the twinkle in my eye

Remember how I splashed in the waves
walked fast to explore unfamiliar paths
to see all I could see along the way,

shared time and exchanged stories,
held a few hands, gave a helping hand,
looked for the next unique adventure

as I soared high above the clouds
always dreaming of brighter tomorrows
knowing I will meet you again.

This is a poem of mine from 2009.  Amazing that it was written 9 years ago,
but it could have been written yesterday.  Actually perhaps that is
why I like the message in this poem.  It is timeless.  At least for me.

Spring Ahead Fall Behind

Spring Ahead Fall Behind

Spring ahead fall behind
we now have summer time
may summer come soon
with all of its warmth

I know I must wait

I want to bask in the sun
walk barefoot in grass
tan my skin a little
feel the gentle breeze

I know I must wait

I want to eat fresh tomatoes
have picnics by the lake
leave windows wide open
take walks in the dark

I know I must wait

I have more summers
behind me than ahead
how many more to enjoy
will heaven be like summer

I know I must wait.

For Poets United Poetry Pantry.  I sometimes wonder how many summers are ahead of me.  How about you?  In your comments, rather than reflecting on my poem (which is inconsequential to the concept) I would ask you reflect on the passing of time.  How do you deal with years as you live them?  Do you ever, as I do, wonder how many summers you have yet to experience?  Do you appreciate the summers of your life more as you age?  What is your favorite season?  Is there a heaven?  What will it look like?  (To me it will be eternal summer.)

Seize the Day

Seize the Day

Seize the day
someone please
seize the day

with heavy heart
I wait and pray
as I await good
news each day

words do not come
they hide or run
do not allow me
to seize the day

it is up to others
to carry the torch
to raise your voice
to calm the storm

I cannot write
my voice is stilled
my brain is numb
by news of the day

This is my
simple prayer today
oh please,
seize the day.

And carry on
if you can
seize the day.

I find myself near paralyzed by all that is going on.  I wish I were optimistic.
It makes it hard to write poetry.  For Poets United Poetry Pantry using Sumana's
Midweek Motif theme of "Seize the Day."  My poem is too late for that, but
it served as a bit of inspiration.

Voice

Voice

Voice
their voice
voice of young
speak out loud and clear
implore all people to listen
do not let Washington ignore your determined voice.

March
let's march
beat of youth
elders must follow
we have been silent for too long
now we must pass the torch and all of us must march,

No
say no
just say no
no weapons in school
the NRA is not a friend
Stop this country's  madness and collectively say no.

Voice
our voice
voice of all
speak out loud and clear
implore all people to listen
will not let Washington ignore our determined voice.

This is a Fibonacci poem - lines are 1,2, 3, 5, 8, and 13 syllables.  I wrote it for Poets United Poetry Pantry.  The theme of 'voice' came from Susan's Midweek Motif prompt.

I am very inspired by the students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Many of these students have been raising their voices in protest against the NRA; and students and teachers everywhere have been raising their voices against teachers being armed.   I am hopeful that the young will lead us.  I am hopeful that they will begin a movement and that it will spread.  I am hopeful that their voices and actions will inspire us to get our country back.

Fate

Fate

Fate
fickle
fearful force
fingers who he will
friend or foe of no one at all
laughs as he rolls his die to foreordain who falls next.

Fate
hides face
in shadow
holds life in his hands
determines when the ax will fall;
there can be no retreat from what is reserved for you.

Fate
your words
make me quake
your hardness shakes me
and though I am not one to beg
I beseech you to please be gentle with me just this once.

Fate
kind guide
I implore
grant me your mercy
smile on me as you choose my lot
bestow on me the good I wish but do not merit.

This fibonacci poem was written in 2013.  I thought I would share it again today for Poets United Poetry Pantry.  I like the form & think perhaps I should experiment with it once again.

Choose Love

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File%3AValentinesdaytree.jpg

Choose Love

Rosemary asked the question
would you choose love
no matter what the cost
or choose to stay comfortable?

I reply choose love when it comes your way
as there is only one go-around in life
and before long we will have eternity
to be comfortably alone in the grave.

It is never too late to be loving
it is never too late to be loved.
Choose love!

This is written for Poetry Pantry.  You might want to check back and read Rosemary's "The Living Dead" where she featured Kahlil Gibran's poem "Love" this week.

Happy Valentine's Day to you all.

Reflection on the Week

Reflection on the Week

Must escape
go to movie
read a book
walk at the gym

something
anything
god help me
turn off my mind

must avoid
twitter
news aps
facebook
television

stomach churns
nerves on edge
doomsday clock ticks
boots click

each day fear
I want to run
but where?

The Pain Remembered

The Pain Remembered

Sometimes I wonder why memories surface.
In the middle of last night I thought about
the day my fifth grade teacher jerked my arm
painfully and forced me to square dance with her
because I wasn't square dancing right. She
felt the need to show me and humiliate me.

Then I remembered how she made me run the track
around the playground despite my shortness of breath,
despite my painful wheeze.  I remember getting
very sick after that, missing school for days,
which I often did when something triggered my asthma.
I remember wishing I never had to go back.

I remember her evil glares.  She didn't like me.
I was afraid of her.  I hid  from her when I could.
School was no fun. I feared answering questions,
her attention on me, her ridicule.  I was quiet anyway,
but she made me quieter.  I could do nothing right.
It is amazing I became a teacher.

The truth - all of it - written for Poets United Poetry Pantry.
I can still see this woman's face.

Clarity

Clarity

All appears clear
everyone smiles, knows truth,
toasts the knowledge. Full glass.
To life! Raise your glass high.
Then something changes, subtle,
almost imperceptible
fogs the big picture.
Now confusion instead of clarity
blurred ideas, smudged lines
crystal clear no more
muddy waters reside
and I wonder if clarity is
only an illusion.

Sorry for a repeat of an earlier poem - one from 2011.  Unfortunately I find it very relevant today.  Shared with Poetry Pantry.

I Won't Write.....

I Won't Write....

I won't write a political poem
okay?
I mean there are enough people doing that anyway

Never mind the news we hear each day
turn off the radio and television and take a walk
and pay no attention to rampant racism
don't speak up
tomorrow is a new day
this too will pass
trust me it always has

I won't write a political poem
okay?
I mean there are enough people doing that anyway

Turn off the fake news
don't believe what is written in Fire and Fury
climate change is a matter of opinion
bring on the immigrants from Norway
(not wondering why Norwegians would come anyway)
not Haiti or Africa who needs them
but never mind just take a walk.

I won't write a political poem
okay?
I mean there are enough people doing that anyway.

Be happy there are now tax cuts which help the rich
while they tell the middle class the bill will help them
give them a few perks now but they'll suffer in the end
but never mind be happy smile while you can
the poorhouse won't be that bad after they
totally take healthcare benefits away and you can
have a party surrounded by all of your friends.

But no
I won't write a political poem
I mean there are enough people doing that anyway.

I was inspired to write this after reading Rosemary's
Thought Provokers feature this week. The italicized
words are taken from the poem "I Won't Write a
Political Poem, Okay" by Robin Archbold.  Check back.

The Wall

The Wall

We seem to grope blindly

as we look for the door through the wall

Whenever we see an opening

It seems to just as quickly slam closed

we try to remain hopeful

there has to be a way through

maybe if we all join hands

we can together lead the charge

to kick down the blasted wall.

Submitted to Poetry Pantry. Had I written this early enough I would have shared it with Susan's last week's Midweek Motif -- Doorway(s).   Maybe, just maybe, if we all join hands........
