Lightning

Lightning

Lightning may strike when you don't expect it
or it can be predictable but willfully ignored
like when you walk outside in a downpour
paying no attention to the black cloud overhead
or when you go to sleep with no plan in your head
to awaken suddenly with thoughts that never occurred before
lightning is unpredictable but one can expect its strike.

Gif File came from Wikimedia Commons.        This is shared with Poetry Jam, where the prompt is "Lightning" and with Poets United Verse First, where we had to write a seven-line poem.

  1. I like how through the idea of lightning, you manage to make us reflect on what is predictable or not in life and how the predictability of things affect our decisions and judgement. Great picture at the top of your post!

  2. Indeed Mary many things are not exactly predictable yet we can expect them anyway. I like the moving lightning in the picture!

  3. Ha! I love this. And sometimes it is a good strike and sometimes not......I like the "predictable but willfully ignored". That resonates with me for a number of reasons, cackle.

  4. yeah, sooner or later it'll get us, one way or another - it's predictable that way... i like that you allowed for a non-literal interpretation as well

  5. or that joke someone told you three days ago ... that finally sinks in and you break out in laughter ... usually in a crowded place so everyone gives you one of those "who is the crazy person" looks... :)

  6. we may not be able to control where it strikes, but it will def strike...unless we walk around with a big lightning rod...of course as a metaphor lighting strikes might not be bad...smiles.

  8. This poem works on so many levels! I like how it builds from outer danger to inner enlightenment. I can apply it to health, as well, and relationships.

  9. Great thoughts Mary! The unexpected is to be expected. Though being lightning it should not be at great risks hopefully!

  10. Mary.

I really like you thematic poem with its 'live action.' Indeed, inspiration does not have a specific pattern. It arrives at any time. We simply need to be ready to receive the messages:)

  11. Metaphysically, we are taught that there are no real accidents in our lives, that even random spontaneous actions have been pre considered before our incarnation, but surely the lightning strikes worldwide, 40-40 times a second, would counter this notion; your piece has got me thinking about the electrostatic considerations & conundrums.

  13. Flashes of brilliance is exhilarating, though I have never had the kind which awakens. I was awoken while on a camping trip by 100 million plus volts going through my body once. I have great respect for lightning - the cerebral flash in the pan and the natural occurring kind. Run to one; run to shelter for the other.

  14. Unpredictable … and it will strike! So true! Thank you for your comments Mary. I do not want to change my blog. You know it is my home … family sort of spamed me email wise. Maybe I should just ignore the person. yeah, maybe.
