My grandson & me -- a certainty in my life |
What I Know for Sure
Two or three things I know for sure,
not more than that at a time.
Certainties change, are not static,
so what was sure yesterday
is not necessarily sure today.
One cannot know everything for sure.
Today I know for sure
life can flip in a heartbeat,
change course in a moment's time,
that the unexpected can turn
one's whole life around.
Today I know for sure
that time is finite and one
has to find a way to make
the most of it, acknowledging
we have only today.
Today I know for sure
love exists in the world,
love is connected with God,
and somehow things happen
between people for His good.
Two or three things I know for sure,
not more than that at a time.
Certainties change, are not static,
so what was sure yesterday
is not necessarily sure today.
One cannot know everything for sure.
This is written for my prompt over at Poetry Jam this week. The prompt is to write about 'two or three things I know for sure.' Hope you will join us. Also submitted to Poets United Poetry Pantry.
I like the rhythm of your poem, how you have framed it with two repeated lines as well as the repetition at the beginning of the other stanzas. I can identify with a lot of what you know for sure. A lot of truths in these lines, Mary!
ReplyDeleteLove shines in and out of the picture, too. The first verse was chilling, but by the end , it seemed like just enough. Your tone changed that much! I like.
ReplyDeleteExcellent Mary. I like the way the feel of the repeated stanza is changed by what is said between. There is really so little that is certain.
ReplyDeleteBut but the cat knows all, right? Don't burst his bubble lol
ReplyDeletelove does exist...and what an important thing to know as well....and there are def things we can not know for sure...because life does change fast...luckily there are a few things we can hold onto...
ReplyDeletehappy sunday mary....smiles..
DeleteThere are a few things everyone know for sure
ReplyDelete1. If you ever make a complaint to any institution they will always respond by saying that you are the first complainant that have ever had.
2. Politicians always say theyare leave political life to spend more time with the family
3.Bigger is not better
.
Wonderful....................
ReplyDeletelove exists - This is great and what a thing to know. Connected to God and flowing to us. Great lines and excellent poem.
ReplyDeleteLove how change is a sure thing and that it's all about 'today'.
ReplyDeletenice write..so true most things in life are in constant change..only certainty is love and God
ReplyDeleteLove all of this - especially the fifth stanza.
ReplyDeletelove the use of repetition. Now that I think of it, I guess your right, maybe it is just a few things at a time that I can be certain about…before they change too!
ReplyDeleteYour words ring true for my situation right now, especially stanza 2.
ReplyDeletenice rhythm and perfect words! Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteYou are a wise woman, Mary.
ReplyDeletelove the way you have captured that state of flux...
ReplyDeleteI most resonate with "love exists in the world". Thank God and Goddesses that it does. I love this poem - and your prompt - Mary. Cool!
ReplyDeleteYes, Mary, we only have the "now", that is most certain in this life. A lovely prompt and response.
ReplyDeletePamela
We can never be sure about anything. That is the only sure.
ReplyDeleteIt is a positive choice to make - many don't ever get to this point in their life. The sooner one realizes this though, the more hope this world has!
ReplyDeleteLots to ponder here Mary. That's for sure :)
ReplyDeleteLove - certainly exists in the world, and it's important to stay with open heart and trust that all challenges on the way - beginning of new path on the next level, 'new normal' <3
ReplyDeletelife's uncertainties -- definitely a surety; enjoyed your write
ReplyDeletemuch love...
wow...very nice
ReplyDeleteLove does exist though sometimes it's hard to find. And ever so true, change is one of the only certainties in life.
ReplyDeleteLove and loved ones are surely the most certain and welcome thing to have in our lives..gorgeous photo also..
ReplyDeleteMary, what a wonderful photo, lots of love in that and in your poem, it has such a steady rhythm there is a sureness to it. Really enjoyed it :-)
ReplyDeleteYesyou can't be sure what will be sure from one moment to the next
ReplyDeleteSo lovely picture:) a generation's story!!
ReplyDelete...i couldn't agree more on what you said here Mary.... what we can know for sure is what we currently have.... we can assume about tomorrow... but tomorrow is tomorrow... & today is today... we can only enjoy best the tangibility of an event more pleasingly than what we don't have yet... ... an enjoyable read & reflection... & a lovely photo of you & grandson... smiles...
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photo of you & your grandson! You know 3 more things than I a sure about :)
ReplyDeletethat's the beauty of life.. can change at any moment.
ReplyDeleteWhat you cover in the first three verses...profoundly freaks me out. I have to avoid thinking about finite nature and the fragility of, well, everything. Or I get anxious. You struck a nerve with me, so, kudos.
ReplyDeleteCertainties do change. Well-penned. :-)
ReplyDelete-HA
wise words!
ReplyDelete"One cannot know everything for sure." : i agree with that. :)
enjoyed the read.
Oh I know for certain all will change... but we still cling on and are always surprised.. and it's never that lottery ticket.
ReplyDeleteWe're on the same wavelength, given my recent trip to visit old friends..... so true!
ReplyDeleteSo true -"Certainties change, are not static,
ReplyDeleteso what was sure yesterday
is not necessarily sure today."
So many truths. I like the format of opening and closing with the same stanza.
ReplyDeletehonest confessions which stand true for most of us.nice to read your poems again Mary. My hectic schedule has made me miss the pantry quite a bit recently.glad to be back.
ReplyDeleteYup...well said :-)
ReplyDeleteZQ
Oh, awesome picture!
ReplyDeleteSuch a positive poem, filled with acceptance of life.
ReplyDeleteA magnificent poem Mary and such a sweet photo. Love, you've said it all.
ReplyDeleteI know for sure I like this poem Mary
ReplyDeleteI think perhaps two or three is enough at one time...
ReplyDeleteWe only have NOW and sometimes it is difficult to stay in it. Remembering the past, and dreaming about a future, if they become only escapes, can rob us of the Now we have. Like the simple clear thought and wisdom in your poem, Mary.
ReplyDeleteElizabeth
Very wise and lovely words Mary.
ReplyDeleteAnna :o]
«Today I know for sure
ReplyDeletelove exists in the world,
love is connected with God,
and somehow things happen
between people for His good.»
This part is to 'be medidated on' :)
A lovely composition!
Yes. I agree with this poem, Mary. What I know for sure this moment may not be true the next. :) Very clear and wise.
ReplyDelete"Certainties change, are not static," and that we can be certain of Mary! everything is in transformation, our thoughts, feelings, life and death around us… change is the thing we can be sure of.
