Ode to My Glasses

Ode to My Glasses

My glasses appraise
words I write
criticize my musings
With their sharpened view
are never reticent
to tell me boldly
what I should redo
and I say thank you.

My glasses pierce me
find me flawed
as I look in the mirror
powerless to hide
from their relentless
analytical gaze
and I say this is me.

My glasses sleep
when I sleep but
wake on command
to perform
their necessary tasks
never complain
even in the middle
of a restless night
and I am grateful.

Even though my
glasses are plain
far from elegant
they are ravishing
as they assist me
to see beauty
in the world and you
and I am content.

This is what came to me as I attempted to write an ode to Tony's prompt over at dVerse Form for AllFlawed as it may be, my glasses are pleased. Smiles.

  1. Funny and sweet poem! My own glasses are very critical too, of my own work and of myself. They also tend to disappear when most needed. Yet I couldn't do without them. Cute photo!

  2. How wonderful to praise the close assistance of the so oft ignored glasses. I usually look right through them! But I understand the gratitude of the first three stanzas and LOVE how they ravish you and aid all of us in the 4th.

  7. I like the originality here. I wear my glasses at work only. I'm supposed toy wear them more but ya know how that goes :)

  8. this is so perfectly in tune with style of many of Neruda's odes - praise poems to everyday, taken-for-granted objects, helping us to see them in a new light. Your glasses, like mine, help you (me) to see - in my case to see anything at all.

  9. I can never do any writing without them either ~ I only used them for writing though, thankfully but they never complain either ~

What a funny picture too ~ Made me smile ~

  10. Well, glasses R us, for the boomers, those stricken with presbyopia. Is the pic of one of your pooches? It is a winner regardless. I have worn glasses since I was 4 years old, so of course, they are an integral part of my cosmoses. Pure Neruda, pure Ode; nice job.

    1. Ha, not one of my pooches...though it possibly COULD be the same breed. However, more likely a chihuahua than a toy fox terrier (which I have).

  11. Very well done Mary. I like the way you imbued the glasses with a kind of life force of their own. >KB

  12. smiles...where would we be without our glasses...our eyes...the saying thank you to your glasses made me smile....even the intangibles or inanimate we can praise for sure....I am not there yet, but I imagine I will in the next couple years...

  15. I LOVE this poem. I wear glasses and this is such a beautiful way of looking at them. I really like the last stanza. Our glasses do open our eyes to the beauty that is around us! Thank you for this...

  16. I think your glasses were pleased to be honored in such a hard way. They work hard to provide clarity.

  17. Figures, we are more for our servant and taskmaster. Tough job but I'd say our glasses were up to spec!

  28. My glasses are my friend - as long as a mirror isn't part of a nasty menage a trois.

  29. Mary this is my 3rd time here to your poem … non of my comments take. And they have each been really long, so the fact that they don't take is annoying. I am in love with the photo. Being old, there are too many times when I do not feel like putting on eye make up. So instead I have way tool many pairs of cool glasses all bifocals and all tinted. And by the way these glasses are very, very cool. And your wee one in the glasses. So adorable!

  30. I'd be lost without my glasses. As annoying as they can be (and you point out their flaws brilliantly, Mary), they truly are appreciated even as I curse them. :)

  31. Ha! Very charming, Mary. I love my glasses too. K.

  32. What a great idea, beautifully executed, to write about your analytical glasses.

  33. While my glasses don't hold as much love for me as yours appear to, I do appreciate them...especially for the truth within your last stanza.

  34. I love this! A true celebration of the (apparently) ordinary. :)
